“I’m Lovin It”, “Eat Fresh”, and “The Joy of Eating”.
fairly high profile advertising taglines for some big corporations, those being McDonald’s, Subway, and Sara Lee.
I drove past a billboard for Sara Lee’s promotion in Buckhead a week or so back, and the tagline stuck with me more than the actual business name … so I typed it into my browser address bar when I got home. thejoyofeating.com . Guess what happened? It lead me to a Sara Lee operated site supporting their ad initiative. ‘Sara Lee hires smart people’, I thought.
So I thought, what other Corps out there were smart enough to grab the domain name around their tagline.
McDonald’s & “I’m Lovin It” ( imlovinit.com) Ding, McDonald’s owned and operated.
Subway and “Eat Fresh” ( eatfresh.com ) Bzzzzt. Dead site. Tsk tsk tsk Subway.
(ya’ll know of any other examples?)
AnchorMortgage.com sold to bidder name ‘bum’ for $5,123. Bidder ‘james kim’ was actively bidding against.
a few weeks back, I made a reference comparing the cost of registering a domain with GoDaddy vs Network Solutions. To make sure I was quoting correct numbers, I ran a quick check on a gibberish domain at Netsol just so I could take a peek at their yearly rates (the gibberish domain was ‘FLUMSIOISDASDDS.COM’).
During that process, I was actually logged into my Netsol account (something I didn’t realize until later)..
fast forward about a week.
My phone rings with an odd phone number and area code. I answer, and on the other line is a Netsol representative. “Hello Sir, this is X from Network Solutions. We noticed you had search for,” then he starts to stumble cause he couldn’t quite pronounce the domain I searched for, “floom-sio-sdaads.com, and we wanted to let you know that the domain was still available for registration.”
I kindly said thanks, but no thanks, and left it at that..
fast forward about another week..
this morning I got an email from Netsol regarding FLUMSIOISDASDDS.COM.
The domain name(s) you recently searched for
is still available! Register it today for only $19.00/year*. That’s 45% OFF of the annual purchase price!
sheesh louise.. I wonder if this would have happened 100 times if I had searched for 100 domains that day..
So be aware my friends.. if you use Netsol in any capacity, be sure to log out when running analysis..
everyone and their brother may already know this shortcut, but for those of you who don’t..
when you type a domain name into your browser address bar, there’s a shortcut which allows you to skip typing in www or even the .com / .net / or .org extension..
check it out..
type a word into the address bar, then hold down the Ctrl button and press enter…voila, the http://www and .com are magically appended…
now, type a word and hold down the Shift button and press enter … voila, the .net extension is appended..
if you hold down Ctrl+Shift and press enter, the .org extension gets added..
I was aware of the .com shortcut years ago, and sortof forgot it. As I was researching some names this past week, I found myself heavily leaning on it, and man it saved me about an hour over the course of the day..
**UPDATE**
Looks like the Cntrl+Enter works on both Firefox & IE
the Shift+Enter and Shift+Cntrl+Enter only seems to work on Firefox (what I’m using)

not sure if this is a DG exclusive, as I didn’t see this name on the auction list at TRAFFIC New York,
but
it appears the owner of Carpet.com is currently accepting private offers for the name..
word is, the price is approaching $500K currently, which - in my opinion, is darn reasonable..
I would have personally bought it myself if I had the cash laying around..
I’ve also confirmed that the owner *is* responding through his email address posted on WhoIS
