Domain Investor Frank Schilling and Roland LaPlante

03/21/2007 - Monte Cahn
Monte is joined by domain investor Frank Schilling. Frank Schilling coined the term domain investor, describing those who invest in high-value generic domain names for the purpose of future development. The phrase never really caught on and today industry participants in this space are collectively known as domainers. Frank Schilling patented the “Generic Top Level Domain Rerouting System” in 2003, financed the Caribbean’s first ICANN accredited domain name registrar in 2004, joined as a member of the ICANN business constituency and cofounded the non profit Internet Commerce Association in 2006.

being a SEOmainer, it’s always a plus when I acquire an auctioned domain listed in DMOZ or Y! Dir..

similar to what Jim said, Screw the Sandbox - Buy an Old site, I say “Screw submitting a domain to Dmoz & never being listed; plus screw paying $299 every year to be included in the Yahoo Directory…just buy a domain that’s already listed there..

We all know the positive impact and weight associated with being included in these two big-boy directories, so I’ll skip that part..

Here’s what you need to avoid if you *are* acquiring domains listed in either place. ..

  1. Don’t Park Them! Build ‘Em Out - if you park domains you acquire at auction, expect any directory listings to disappear. I’m not sure if humans do this, or whether the directories run an automated system to monitor the dns information … all I know is that it happens. Sometimes as fast as 24 hours.
  2. Don’t Change the Domain’s Topic - Don’t buy a domain called ‘doggie-info.com’ that has 2,500 inlinks, been around since ‘96, listed in dmoz & y! dir, then change the site’s topic to ‘underwater basket weaving‘. Apart from being dumb, it’ll get you a free ticket out of the dirs.. Hire some independant editors to develop some unique content (in this case, dog info). And don’t scrape the content off their old site - you’ll be asking for a lawsuit
  3. Don’t build an MFA (Made For AdSense) Site - I’m not saying don’t include AdSense - or any other contextual ad network - but don’t design the site so poorly that it upsets the editors at these directories. They actively monitor sites in each category, and’ll pull anything that seems remotely spammy. Take some time to build a worthwhile site. Implement ad units in strategic places. Think long term.

It’s kindof like the domain is talking to you…. “help me help you”..

ie. help keep these suckers listed in the dirs and they’ll stand to help you in the near and long term..

personally, I like a messy desk. And I enjoy slowly messing it up. Looking at my desk right now, I can see expired coupons, a dinner receipt from portofino bistro, a menu to Tamarind, some Lord Willys stickers I got for free when I bought a shirt on my last NYC trip, folded paper with potential domains to buy, a drink from Firehouse subs, a tape measure, a mad magazine, a sonos player, san pelligrino, a calculator, some speakers playing the band ‘Beirut’ on Rhapsody, along with some other odds and ends.

There’s something about a messy desk that conveys a sense of urgency to me. And with that sense, I feel I work a bit better.

Then I thought it’d be neat to take a camerphone pic of what my desk looks like right now and share with everybody…

anybody else wanna share what your domaining/seo/sem/blogging desk looks like right now?

if so, and you’ve got a blog, post a quick pic along with whats on your desk.. it’d be neat to see..

and if you don’t have a blog, email me a pic + desk items and I’ll add to the bottom of this post..

I doubt this’ll gain any traction, but let’s see..

poor domain name domainersgazette.com. It’s so new and fresh, it doesn’t get much google love yet..

take for instance the term we mentioned a few days back, “SEOmainer”..

a Google search on that term shows 3 total documents indexed, DG coming in at #3 ( Frank and dnhour above us )

if it was a grade-school relationship, and we were the guy, and google the girl, we’d be trying to pass a note to google in class, and she’d be casting an odd glance at us…
