I ran over to Oxford Mississippi last weekend to see some friends, and run some research for one of my sites…

For those who haven’t visited — downtown Oxford is centered around an idyllic town square, where the city pulses with activity year round.

During the trip, we met a few folks for dinner at Taylor Grocery, down in Taylor MS. One of the folks who joined us had just opened up a new pizza joint in Oxford - right off the downtown square.

The moniker he chose for his new venture? Square Pizza. Aptly named.

Now, this fellow ain’t a domainer, but he understood the value of a domain name. So, prior to his business opening, he went domain shopping for SquarePizza.com, and discovered that it was taken. But he did recognize BuyDomains had it for sale.

At this point, he could have easily scurried to .net, .org, .biz, .me, or .whatever. But he didn’t. A non-domainer understood the value of .com. And so - he wisely negotiated the price down, and eventually spent a few hundred dollars to acquire it.

A smart business decision? You Bet.

And I told him exactly that.

I find it fascinating, in these small situations, to discover small business owners that ‘get it’. That don’t settle for hacked up, dash-ridden, number plagued .biz domains, and go for the .com gold.

So now that he’s taken care if his site, I gotta figure out how I can get him to deliver to Atlanta…

shameless self promotion here..

I bought eDaycare.com about a year back, had big plans to build a daycare directory out of it..

but with Inspection Scores, and my city sites, it fell by the wayside..

I liked the idea behind Bido, so I tossed it into the ring..and it goes up for auction tomorrow…

it’s a great name, though, if you do some digging.. has a nice history, some solid inlinks, and averages around 5 visits a day..

just a little attention would serve this domain well… and nice site could be built on this foundation with a relatively low amount of work..

take a peek… and bid! Bid like the wind!

**and yes, I forgive you Mr. Fulton : )

don’t even think of outbidding me at auction… or even sniping a domain from an at-large mom and pop consumer before me…

or else I’ll sic Olivia and Oglethorpe on you.. and they will knead you into oblivion.

(yes, yes, Oglethorpe was gentle and cute way back when, but he’s a darned claw assassin these days…be forewarned)

So, I was bored the other day, and googled ‘domainer’ to see who was coming up in the serps..

wikipedia, domainer.com, dailydomainer.com, domainersmagazine.com, etc..

then a paid ad caught my eye..

domainer1.jpg

“Find our how $8 domains sell for $2,000+”..

hey, I’m a fine connoisseur of infomercials and ebook scams. Inquisitive, I clicked..

and below is the vortex I was immediately sucked into, along with my internal monologue..

domainer2.JPG

What appeared was an A-typical ebook lander homepage. Along with an immediate pop-up pestering me to sign-up for something…before I’d even seen the site. No Thanks.

[I close the pop-up]

domainer3.JPG

I scroll down, and they show off their “domain sale”. $2,500. Now, don’t get me wrong, that’s an ok sale. But it ain’t something I’m gonna attach ‘mind blowing’ to.. And hell, the date range is for the whole year… so he busted his arse for the 365 days and only made $2,500? Shoot, it’s actually closer to $2,300 after the expenses listed..

domainer4.JPG

WTF, and now they want to charge me $67 so I can learn how to make just $2,300? Over an entire year?

Screw this I’m outta here..

[I hit back button]

domainer5.JPG

Uh-oh, a “live” agent would like to offer me a discount.. tempting….but I’ll have to pass..

[I close the MessageBox]

domainer6.JPG

touche, another MessageBox.. Am I sure I want to navigate away? Lordy, yes. This is beginning to remind me of the Badger Car salesman (which if you haven’t seen, i HIGHLY recommend)

[I close the MessageBox]

domainer7.JPG

Uh-oh, now Rina’s hot-boxing me.. she shoots me a message, says she’s gonna tell me all the secrets!

She’s too kind, but I pass.

[I close her box]

domainer8.JPG

Wow. Um, wow. Another Message Box. Am I sure? Only thing I’m sure about now, is that I need a shot of Makers Mark after this experience.
