I revisited one of my favorite blog posts today, from Tropical SEO, written by Andy Hagans..

back in ‘06, he wrote a post that still speaks volumes to me, nearly two years later..(hell, I even commented on it back in May of ‘07)

for us domainers, it specifically speaks volumes, due to the fact the we’re all really pack rats, siphoning in domain names with the eventual “vision” of developing them out into some wide swath portal power.

Now, the somewhat unspoken secret in domaining is this: domainers are lazy. Sure we collect all these names, but do we develop them to their full potential? No. Shoot, I’m even an exception, cause I develop all my names, but since I consistently buy more and more, I can only spend a limited amount of time on each property, possibly creating 25-50 pages of content. After that, I gotta bolt cause more names are on the block - names I need to buy.

And if you look at Andy’s post, you’ll see my comment.. it definitely helped me re-focus my priorities at that moment in time, but a month or two later, I became re-addicted to buying names, and throwing more into my portfolio.

Today was another re-focus moment. I’ve got to stop buying domain names. Or slow down at least. I’ve got a portfolio of solid names. Both from a dictionary level, and from an SEO level with 10 years of age on them, thousands of backlinks, and uber-commercial possibilities.

I can’t pick 20, cause I’m a one man operation. I realistically can only pick 5, max, maybe. Five I devote myself to. And possibly one I hang my hat on. One I live and breathe. One I fight for. “The Big One“, so to speak.

Once I get One generating some consistent cash flow, then I hire some folks. Then I can make my other properties their “One”.

thanks for letting me brain dump this out..

    Hey, there are other options!
When I first started buying domains I tended towards buying very haphazardly to say the least. I would buy a domain related to travel then one about gambling then one about real estate etc…
Then, I started to think in terms of categories, so I bought a ton of Affiliate related domains, gambling domains, nanotech, 3d, etc…which I parked at all the standard parking companies.
Then I heard about a company that offered a program where they create a “network” for domains that have similar themes. You need a minimum of 25 related domains which they set up as individual sites -backlinked to each other. Each site is 8 pages deep, with news, custom RSS feeds, blog, videos, games, polls, photos, adsense, a store , content etc…if you know html you can add your own content as well. Tons of options. The whole shebang is ridiculously cheap.
I now have a 3dWorldNetwork.com, AffiliateWorldNetworks.com, and AdvertisingWorldNetwork.com. I plan to add 4 more categories this month. (They don’t do gambling or adult themes..)
The funny thing is my husband owns a web development company! He is so busy with paying customers he doesn’t have time to develop my sites. Yes, it caused a bit of friction…..Anyway, you can take a look at any of my networks to see what they can do. By the way, I don’t know html, and I haven’t started blogging on my sites since they are very new, so I won’t be the primo example of what you could do…but some sites, like medicareAffiliates.com actually has a page rank of 2 already without any help from me.

    Andy Hagans is soooooooooo 2006!*

*and way smarter two years ago than most developers ever will be. he’s probably the second favorite seo/domainer blogger amongst groupies.**

** unfortunately there are only like 3 seo/domainer groupies.

Hi. I’m just beginning to buy and sell domains. My experience is a little disapointing. On one hand I bought some nice domains easily, including:

    lisboncheaphotels.com

    and:

    venicebudgethotels.com

But I put them in Godaddy for selling and nobody seems interested in them. It seems to me that some advertising makes the diference, and that’s why I’m talking about it. Anyway, if I cant jumpstart my sales with these 2, it seems to me that it would be better to give up. I dont think I can find something better than those.

    Cheers,

    l.

    hey Luis,

it seems you may have hand-registered these..

consider scrubbing sedo.com, afternic.com, or buydomains.com for any needles in the haystack..

that, or closely watch snapnames, tdnam, and namejet every day for attractive names that might be coming up for auction..
