“Domain Name Investors”. “Diversified Technology Holding Company”. “Next-generation Internet Media Company”. “Digital Real Estate Business”. “Online Media Network”.
Sound familiar? Those are a few of the taglines domaining companies use to describe their businesses.
No doubt, they go by tons of monikers. So many, though, it can get confusing to identify who the actual players are…
I’m a domainer, and it even confuses me.
So, this afternoon, I thought I’d try to assemble a nice concise list of all the domain name investment & website acquisition companies out there. I’m sure I’ll miss several, so please drop me a comment if I missed a glaring one (and I’ll add it to the list as well..) And I’m not referring to “Lou & Stew’s” domaining business - I wanted to simply list the (somewhat) big players out there.. ones that seem to control quantity and/or quality.
So without further adieu:
A
A.Waller & Co. (ok ok - I admit it, this is my company. I’m not “big” per se, but hey, it’s my blog, so I get to be listed : )

Very helpful list - thanks!
These might need to be on the list, too:
- InternetBrands.com
- DirectNavigation.com (or do Larry and Ari go with NameMedia now)?
- InternetLandrush.com (site is nothing to look at, but they’ve made some noise)
- Michael Mann’s WashingtonVC.com
thanks a ton Shane, just got those listed..
For DirectNavigation.com, here’s the news story about them going to NameMedia:
“NameMedia Acquires SmartName.com, Adds to Suite of Domain Name Market Solutions
Industry Pioneers Ari Goldberger and Lawrence Fischer Join NameMedia Team
Waltham, Mass, March 5, 2007
NameMedia today announced the acquisition of SmartName.com, one of the pioneers in providing monetization services for owners of high value domain name portfolios.
http://www.namemedia.com/about/releases/03-05-07.html”
it’s odd, also, Washington VC and Internet Real Estate both say they own Software.com and Phone.com (whois says Internet Real Estate owns them though)

Nice report! I wonder what the collective worth of all these companies are, and how many total domains they own combined? Do these companies represent all the major movers and shakers in our industry?
“Do these companies represent all the major movers and shakers in our industry?”
– I’m sure we’ll miss a few, but we’re gonna try to make this as comprehensive as possible..

Hey nice job,
There is a small operation out of portland, ore called OreNet Marketing . They have almost 1,200 domains specializing in the sports realm. They’re claiming they are the largest zookeeper of sports mascots on the internet. Something about having the top 100 most popular sports mascot in the most popular sports. Examples; coeddodgeball.com, logowatchs.com, cwsbaseball.com, trackclubs.com, flagfootballs.com, coachingg.com, celticsbasketball.com, bruinsbasketball.com, falconsfootball.com, lionfootball.com, knicksbasketball.com, redsoxsbaseball.com, mobillocksmith.com are just a few that I saw.
I thought I would mention them since I uncovered them. No website to speak of.
Thanks for the list, Andrew.
You might want to add NetShops; they have a great biz model and are always buyers for new markets they want to enter.
I sold them one of mine a few months ago for that purpose.
Very useful list of companies, this article is now bookmarked!
Cheers
Nice job and very helpful, Peter. I agree that Netshops.com probably should be on the list too.
thanks guys.. Netshops.com now added..
