Crap like this really irks me.

Now, I ain’t a customer of Yahoo web hosting, nor will I ever be. But it’s clear they’re pulling out all stops to con and confuse customers to sign up for their web hosting service.

Get a load of this:

here we see the Yahoo web hosting homepage. Right under ‘Why Choose Yahoo! Web Hosting?’, we see all the amazing advantages of their service (note the sarcasm)

here, lemme blow that section up for you:

yup, you read that right.. UNLIMITED disk space and UNLIMITED data transfer.. they’re so unlimited, they deserved a read squigly line underneath each to drive those points home.

Seems like a pretty good deal to me. Actually, it sounds like the best web hosting deal I’ve ever heard of..

What’s that you say? I shoud click the ‘unlimited details’ link?

Why? They just said they offer UNLIMITED disk space and UNLIMITED data transfer. And they added a RED SQUIGLY LINE! Seems concrete to me..

More like quicksand..

Here are the fine points and small print from their site:

For Disk Space:

You can now create as large a site as you like (you won’t face an upper limit, or “ceiling”), but we will place some constraints on how fast you can grow. In other words, you can add as much content as you want, but maybe not all at once. The vast majority of our customers’ sites grow at rates well within our rules, however, and will not be impacted by this constraint.

So, essentially, you can’t, but kinda can, have unlimited disk space. What a cock up (pardon my french). In my opinion, wouldn’t it be better to physically know your data storage ceiling, than risking Yahoo denying additional uploads cause they feel you’re growing too fast. And they don’t even give you an idea of what that threshold is!?! oye.

Now, Data Transfer:

In most cases, if you use our service appropriately, visitors to your web site will be able to download and view as much content from your site as they like. However, in certain circumstances, our server processing power, server memory, or anti-abuse controls could limit downloads from your site.

… limit downloads, huh? So, rather than unlimited bandwidth, you mean limited bandwidth…

and another thing,
“if you use our service appropriately”… um, yeah, what does my usage have to do with my visitors usage?

Oh, boy.. there’s just so many levels of deception going on here it makes me giggle.

How about this, Yahoo. As a member of the consumer base at large, in exchange for that wonderful offer of Unlimited Web hosting, we’ll give you Unlimited access to Carl Icahn.

Thanks for posting this. I just asked a question about yahoo hosting in another forum and they directed me here.

This unlimited data transfer seemed like a great deal.

I should have read the fine print!
